It's become a cycle in his life that began with Dakin. (And like a true cycle, it always comes back to Dakin, even now when he knows he should have moved past it, that Oxford and other things should have driven the boy from his mind.)

But in between the times Dakin breaks up with a girl and starts taking Posner out for drinks and to clubs and to parties again, there's always someone else. It's the same as it was with Dakin: There's a boy, and he's not perfect, but he's beautiful, and he tolerates Posner, but he doesn't love him. (It's not always because he likes girls, but it usually is.) And Posner always hopes that this time it will be different and that something he does or says will make whatever new boy it is realize that Posner is amazing and fall in love with him.

And he never does, and then there's Dakin, and then there's someone new.

For as long as Orpheus can remember, his life has been ruled by the gods. He grew up with his mother and his aunts in the shadow of Mount Olympus, and almost before he knew how to tell a story that was his to tell, Apollo came down, golden and beautiful and larger than life, and he gave the boy who still listened to poems on his mother's knee a gift that would change his life.

He rarely sees the gods anymore, those he knew or those he didn't, and he realizes that this is mostly a good thing. The gods are dangerous, fickle, easily angered, and the anger of a god is a terrible thing.

But he still has his gift, though it's changed over time, and he still wakes each morning to greet the sun with a song, and he knows that someday, perhaps centuries from now, perhaps tomorrow, Apollo will come down again, and he will gladly repay him for changing his life.

Well...he can hope anyway.

Re: Orpheus
I love both of these and I like your Orpheus. The gods are so rarely kind.

Re: Orpheus
I'm glad you liked it. :)

I always think that Orpheus would know that he should be really wary of the gods, but that he wouldn't be able to help loving them, some more than others.

Re: Orpheus
That makes a lot of sense and seems like it would be true of mortals who the gods have smiled on.

Unforgettable, really? So the Eddie & Sally song, but too easy, almost to as for. Hmmm... What about an Alcide drabble for that one, just to be different?
